In order to promote academic exchanges between outstanding university students, strengthen young students' comprehensive understanding of transportation engineering discipline of Business School(BS), select outstanding students to continue their graduate studies, discover outstanding students to provide an exchange platform, and answer questions in terms of application and enrollment. The Department of Transportation Engineering of BS held a national summer camp for outstanding students from July 8 to 10, in which nearly 30 outstanding students from more than 10 universities domestic and abroad participated.
On the morning of July 8, the opening ceremony of the summer camp was held online. Prof. Han Yin, the leader of transportation engineering discipline, delivered an opening speech. Prof. Han firstly expressed a warm welcome to the participating students, then made a brief introduction on the history development of the discipline, the current platform, and put forward passionate expectations for the future development of the discipline and the professional enthusiasm of the students. Prof. Zhao Jing, Director of the Department of Transportation Systems Engineering, gave a detailed introduction on the development history of the discipline, laboratory platform, student training platform, faculty strength, disciplines and research directions, previous postgraduate applications and admissions, and the arrangement of the summer camp activities.
Two young faculty representatives from the Department of Traffic Systems Engineering, Wang Jiawen and Wu Jingxian, gave academic lectures for the students based on their research. Starting from the current popular topics in traffic research, Associate Professor Wang Jiawen gave a lively academic presentation on the research background, existing results and future prospects of Internet+ Data-driven Urban Road Traffic Management Optimization. Ms. Wu Jingxian reported her research work Analysis of large truck fatal accidents considering the interaction of accident risk factors to the students: from problem formulation, theory, method, and verification of research findings. Finally, Prof. Han commented on the progress and effectiveness of the two teachers' research topics and research work, and pointed out to the students that they should fully exploit their intelligence. The camp opening ceremony also came to a successful end with the active discussion among the participating teachers and students.
In the afternoon of July 10, the students were interviewed in groups. The interview was conducted strictly in accordance with the standards of postgraduate entrance interview. The Department of Transportation Systems Engineering invited the postgraduate supervisors to examine the students' abilities such as English, mathematics, and basic academic knowledge, and selected the outstanding students based on their overall performance and issued the outstanding students' certificates. Cao Junzhe, a student from the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), said that the teachers' lectures were solid research, and he liked the rigorous academic atmosphere. From the teachers’ presentations, he really felt the charm of this discipline. Li Xiang, the representative of outstanding students, said that after the study and interaction in this summer camp, he felt the rigorous academic atmosphere and all the teachers were very enthusiastic and hard-working, and hoped to study at USST one year later. Finally, Prof. Han Yin said in his concluding speech that the discipline of transportation engineering has made great progress in talent cultivation, scientific research and faculty development, and is a discipline with responsibility, history, platform and future. He hoped that the students will get good results in the graduate entrance examination and become a part of the big family.
